Bobby Zhang Wins Macau Poker Cup Opening Event
Last weekend saw the start of the Macau Poker Cup’s 20th edition with record numbers registering for the PokerStars Live tournament series. The tournament’s first three days included three side events which attracted a total of 743 players and saw HK$2,456,622 given away in prize money.
The highlight of the weekend was the new MPC warm-up tournament, the HK$6,000 buy-in ‘Baby Dragon’ event in which 332 people took part.
The event was won by Australian Bobby Zhang who collected HK$340,800 in prize money and a new trophy. After winning he said, “It definitely feels great to win the first Baby Dragon in my first poker tournament of 2014.”
As the series progresses the player numbers and prize pools are expected to increase and peak with the ‘Red Dragon’ HK$11,000 buy-in Main Event beginning on January 16th. In order to celebrate the 20th edition of the tournament series a prize pool of HK$8 million has been guaranteed for the Main Event. As a result many believe that the event’s 891-player record will be broken.
PokerStar’s Director of Live Poker Operations in the Asia-Pacific, Danny McDonagh, said, “I’m really impressed with the Baby Dragon turnout and the player feedback has been tremendous. Our goal to have a 1,000-plus field for the Red Dragon main event seems very likely.”
