Atlantic City to Host Powerboat Event
Thanks to cooperation between the Atlantic City Alliance, the Golden Nugget Atlantic City and a number of other casinos and local businesses, the New Jersey Offshore Powerboat Racing Association will be holding the Atlantic City Offshore Grand Prix at the end of June.
The race day will be June 23rd and will see powerboats which are 40 to 50 feet long racing at speeds over 150mph.
The president of the NJOPRA, Toni Potthoff, said “we’re very happy to be back in Atlantic City. We didn’t have such good luck the last time we were here because Mother Nature closed us down. But we’re very happy to be back again.”
There has not been a successful powerboat event in Atlantic City for 25 years, in October 1989 Trump Castle (now the Golden Nugget) staged the World Championships. There was an event scheduled in September 2010 however, strong winds and 20-foot seas forced officials to cancel it.
NJOPRA chairman and director Dave Patnaude said that the weather is “one of the reasons we moved the event to late June, because the weather conditions should be much better.”
