Italian Government Fighting Gambling Sites

The Italian government has gone through with its promise and has begun restricting online casino sites on ISPs. For months different groups and organizations have been fighting the Italian government against its plan to ban certain online casino sites and to restrict others. British based online casino gambling sites and others in the industry have been pushing the Italian authorities to cancel its pending restrictions – but to no avail.

The restrictions force Italian ISPs to redirect online casino traffic to a specially edited landing page. The ISPs fear that this redirection could cause problems for them in cyberspace. They admit that the amount of traffic for casino sites is huge, and the redirection can cause problems because of massive log-based user listings. The casino sites generate an innumerable about of traffic for the ISPs and they are fearful of technical hitches resulting in the restrictions.

The ISPs are just part of the long list of those which oppose the ban. The logic behind the ban is to protect Italian online casino fans from unrestricted sites and credit card fraud, as well as illegal gambling sites. In practice however, the restrictions limit the choice of online casinos for Italians, thus eliminating some of the competition. It is know that limited competition is only bad for the customers. The question is who really comes out as the winner in this situation – the casinos are not happy, the ISPs are not happy and the clients are not happy.
