The communications director at Paddy Power said, “We want to make sure that we’re in place and ready. We have applied for the license to be in there, and we’ll then see what is viable. We’re putting ourselves in position.”

The company has set up a small team of people in North America with Eamonn Toland as the president of gambling and casinos, their job is to identify opportunities within the country.

Last year Paddy Power received an online gaming license for Nevada but is yet to launch operations there.

If the whole of North America were to adopt regulated online gambling it would become the biggest market in the world. However, according to Goodbody analyst, Gavin Kelleher, it could “be a number of years before it is close to the European market in terms of what products are allowed. Many US states are very protectionist when it comes to gambling.”
