Disney Supports Republicans in Upcoming Elections
So far Disney has spent a massive $2.5 million this year on political candidates in Florida.
The Orlando Sentinel reported that Disney has donated more money than any previous election year and most of the money has gone to Republicans.
According to the Sentinel’s analysis, almost 90 cents out of every dollar that Disney has spent on Florida campaigns in the current election has gone either to Republican candidates or Republican interest groups.
At present Republicans control the Governor’s Office and the Florida Legislature.
There is some speculation over why Disney is displaying such favouritism to the Republicans.
Traditionally Disney has always supported liberal causes, particularly in the area of gay rights.
It is obvious that Disney is hoping that politicians who support its legislative agenda will be elected.
In particular Disney will be interested in ensuring that only politicians who are against any Las Vegas style casinos in South Florida are elected.
Bryan Malenius, Disney’s spokesman said that Disney’s “contribution levels in 2012 reflect increased efforts to support candidates who oppose the expansion of casino gambling in Florida.”
Obviously Disney wouldn’t welcome any competition to their flagship theme park and any local casino complexes could present just that.
