Like Americans, Italians Support Online Casino Gaming
It seems that polls in the U.S. indicating that a vast majority of the public is opposed to a ban on online casino gambling aren’t alone in the wider gambling world. Despite the Italian government’s tough new stance – as opposed to the almost passive, albeit negative, stance of the U.S. – on online casino gaming, poker is fast becoming the number one card game in Italy. Following similar trends sweeping Europe, increasing numbers of Italian online casino players are logging on to online casino sites to play poker.
The Italian online casino poker buzz is said to be attributed to the growing awareness of the game due to sports television channels latching on to U.S. poker tournaments. Last year, the World Series of Poker, the European Poker Tour and the World Poker Tour all made it to Italian television. The increased exposure enjoyed by Italian poker fans such as Luca ‘Pretty Boy’ Pagano and Robert ‘Dartagnan’ Binelli has also encouraged young Italian casino players to try poker online. Poker online thrives in the U.S. as well as in Europe, with American gamblers making up a significant percentage of overall online gambling industry revenues.
Italy’s first official online casino poker site has just signed up its 1000th member – 90 percent of which are Italian. It remains to be seen whether or not the Italian government’s recent ban on online casino gaming will dampen the widespread enthusiasm for poker. Under new government legislation, it is illegal for any internet service provider to allow traffic from online casino sites onto Italian servers. Several prominent gaming firms are currently preparing to take the Italian government to court to contest the legislation.
