Become a Member of Congress in New Mobile Game
A new video game, For the People: Fantasy Politics, allows the player to become the 436th member of the House of Representatives.
The game which has been launched for Facebook and mobile devices is meant to replicate the experience of being a member of Congress. Players will be required to balance their re-election campaign, meetings with lobbyists, committee meetings and votes at the same time as gaining political weight and funding.
The game was developed with help from former senators Norm Coleman and Evan Bayh. It carefully replicates some of the ways in which the Hill actually works including committee votes and avatars modelled on real legislators.
Players will have to meet with various lobbyists and take decisions on which policies to support. However, the game does not carry much information; all that the player is provided with is the one or two sentences spoken by the lobbyists.
Shel Mann, the inventor of the game and CEO and Founder of Rocket Surgeon Entertainment, said that the game will give players “a sense of politics – that it’s not always easy to get things through.” He went on to say that the “game is going to be fun and engaging, but underneath it all, you’re going to be learning about the real system.”
