Lionel Messi Dethroned As Cristiano Ronaldo Voted World’s Best Footballer

The votes have been cast and The Guardian’s list of the top 100 footballers has been made public. Among the top names gracing the list are Paul Pogba, Thomas Muller, Arjen Roben, Manuel Neuer, and Lionel Messi. However, it is Cristiano Ronaldo who takes the cake as the #1 footballer in the world according to the judges.

Commanding 74% of the total votes, Ronaldo has dethroned Messi, who took the honor in both 2012 and 2013, as the world’s top player. While the two have struggled between one another for fan affection the world over, it has come to pass that Ronaldo command the most laurels.

Some have argued 2014 was the year of Cristiano, as he outshined his contemporaries. An achievement list including 56 goals in 51 matches overall, Champions League and World Club accolades have all contributed to the decision.
