Manchester United Transfer Targets for Summer 2018

Manchester United Transfer Targets for Summer 2018

With the season now over and the summer transfer window opening in just a few days’ time speculation is mounting over who the main targets will be for the big teams in the coming months.

While Manchester United has had a respectable season, Jose Mourinho will certainly be looking to strengthen his side in an attempt to do better next season. There have been numerous rumours about possible Manchester United targets over the past few months and here is a look at a few of them.

Gareth Bale

If Manchester United are able to sign Gareth Bale it would be a huge coup and seen by many as a big statement of intent for the season to come. Many believe that Bale is currently one of the best players in Europe, but he has been struggling for consistency and game time at Real Madrid.

Bale has had many outstanding moments with Real Madrid, but the club may be willing to let him go over the summer as they too hope to sign a number of big name players from around Europe.

Bale will probably be extremely expensive but it is likely that Jose Mourinho would be happy to pay whatever it takes to bring the Welshman back to the Premier League, providing he has the funds. Bale has already shown that he is comfortably playing in England and he would be a huge boost to the side.

However, Madrid will require a huge offer and Mourinho has already said that a deal is unlikely to happen. On the other hand, surprises have happened in the past and if he can find the funding, it is a very real possibility.

Danny Rose

Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose is another one of Mourinho’s top targets for this summer. He has been extremely impressive for Spurs over the last two seasons, but they will be unwilling to let him go having lost Kyle Walker last summer.

While losing another important defender would be a massive blow to Spurs, they have put a price of close to £50 million on his head and if any team were to pay that amount, then Spurs would have plenty of funds with which to buy a suitable replacement.

There is every chance that United will be willing to pay that fee as they seek to strengthen their defence. It is known that Mourinho is keen to find another left-back and Rose has shown that he is one of the best in that position in the Premier League.

As is usual with top players, a deal would be expensive and Spurs are sure to be reluctant to let him go, especially to a direct rival. However, this doesn’t mean that United won’t do their best to sign him.

Antoine Griezmann

There has been speculation over Antoine Griezmann’s future for a very long time now. Last year he pledged his loyalty to his current club, Atletico Madrid, while they were placed under a transfer ban. Rather than leave the club struggling, he decided to stay and help them for another season.

However, there have always been signs that he could leave La Liga and move to England and it is more than likely that Manchester United will try to sign him this summer.

Marco Verratti

Manchester United have been watching Marco Verratti for a long time now. While the team have signed Nemanja Matic, they are thought to be eager to add more strength to their midfield, especially as some of their current midfielders are likely to be on their way out.

Many think that Verratti would be a clever addition to the Red Devils as he has been impressive with his commanding performances for PSG throughout the season. However, Manchester United will have to act fast if they want to sign him as PSG are hoping that Verratti will soon sign a long-term contract with them.

Fabinho

Throughout last summer’s transfer season Manchester United were busy trying to sign Fabinho but in the end the midfielder remained at Monaco for another year.

Last summer Monaco lost a number of important players to other clubs, such as Bakayoko to Chelsea and Silva to Manchester City. However, they managed to hang on to Fabinho despite Manchester United’s relentless work to bring him over.

At one point a deal seemed extremely close and several places were reporting that a one had been signed. However, this turned out not to be the case and instead Manchester United went on to sign Nemanja Matic.

However, United are most definitely still interested in Fabinho and speculation has only increased over the season, especially when Fabinho stormed out of a Monaco training session in anger. He would be an expensive signing for United, but as he has shown at Monaco, he is certainly good value for money.

Sergi Roberto

Last summer United tried to sign Sergi Roberto from Barcelona and this summer he is expected to once again be one of their top transfer targets.

Roberto is superb in both midfield and defence, as he has shown on numerous occasions during his time with Barcelona. Manchester United are certainly not the only team interested in signing him, but they may be one of the more determined. He would bring depth to the team in several positions, something that Mourinho will certainly value as he tries to win silverware next season.

Raphael Varane

Manchester United may not be as interested in Raphael Varane as they once were, but that doesn’t mean that he has completely dropped off their list of targets.

Last summer Varane didn’t sound particularly fond of Jose Mourinho or keen on working with him again, which made it seem fairly unlikely that he would move to Old Trafford.

Furthermore, Real Madrid value Varane greatly and he has become a key part of the team. As a result, they are unlikely to let him go very easily.

However, United are always interested in adding more depth to their squad, even with players such as Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly, and the addition of Varane would be a major coup. As a result, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Mourinho did make another attempt to sign him once again this summer.

Leander Dendoncker

In recent years Leander Dendoncker has been hugely impressive for Anderlecht. Both domestically and in Europe he caught the attention of a number of big clubs and there is sure to be competition for his signature.

Manchester United are amongst the teams interested in signing the young player. His youth is a major advantage as there is plenty of time for him to improve even more. However, his current club are also aware of this, making them reluctant to part with him.

However, if Manchester United were to put in a high enough offer then it could be enough to tempt Anderlecht to sell him. In recent years a lot of huge fees have been paid for young players and Anderlecht may choose to make the most of it before the trend reverses.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

It is known that Manchester United have made Sergej Milinkovic-Savic one of their top transfer targets. Currently at Lazio, the midfielder is considered one of the best prospects in Europe and Jose Mourinho is known to be a fan of him.

Milinkovic-Savic certainly has all of the attributes needed to be a top player. He is big, strong, attacks well and also defends very well.

With rumours that Paul Pogba may soon be on the way out of United after falling out with Mourinho, it means that United will be more eager than ever before to sign Milinkovic-Savic.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United fans probably dream of the team signing Cristiano Ronaldo and bringing him back to Old Trafford. Ronaldo is considered by many to be one of the top two players in the world at the moment and he is certainly a target for United this summer.

Ronaldo left Manchester United back in 2009 and since then he has gone from strength to strength playing for Real Madrid and Portugal. He is sure to be remembered as one of the greatest players of all time and if Mourinho could engineer his return to the Premier League it would be a massive win for the club.

There was speculation last year that Ronaldo wanted to leave Real Madrid and it seemed likely that he would move to United. However, in the end the reports amounted to little more than a storm in a teacup and many think that Ronaldo did it in order to get a new deal with the club.

However, United are sure to be monitoring the situation and there is a chance that they could make an offer for him in the coming months.
