UEFA Champions League: October 22 Match Results, Goals and Highlights

Sixteen teams faced off on the pitch during yesterday’s EUFA Champions League matches with several upsets and high-scoring results. Below we recap the games’ scores and highlights.

Atletico Madrid  5-0  Malmo FF

Atletico Madrid took it to Malmo FF yesterday by dominating on shots and tackles, This allowed the Spanish squad to maintain possession and command a dominating presence on the field.

Atletico Madrid: Koke 48′, Mario Mandzukic 61′, Antoine Griezmann 63′, Diego Godín 87′, Alessio Cerci 92′

Olympiacos F.C. 1-0  Juventus

Playing the more aggressive game on the field is what led to the decided victory over Juventus for Olympiacos, despite the Italian squad having fired more shots on goal and commanded possession throughout the event with their 3-5-2 formation.

Olympiacos: Pajtim Kasami 36′

Liverpool 0-3 Real Madrid C.F.

With possession cut right down the middle for both teams in Liverpool v Real Madrid, it was tenacity and offense that would bring Madrid the win. With far more shots on frame and a third more tackles than Liverpool, it was clear Madrid wanted it more.

PFC Ludogorets Razgrad 1-0 FC Basel

While a close game in score the stats tell another story, one that puts FC Basel , which fell to 10 men after only 18 minutes, in the background taking 21 shots on the chin from Razgrad. Possession also fell widely in favour of the Bulgarians, who were able to place the final thrust in the final minutes of the game.

AS Monaco FC  0 – 0  S.L. Benfica

Another match in last night’s events that put both teams neck-and-neck in stats, the draw both teams taking their share of cards with seven in all being doled out an a second yellow going to Benfica’s Lisandro Lopez at the 76’ mark for a reckless tackle on Portuguese midfielder Joao Moutinho.

R.S.C. Anderlecht 1 – 2 Arsenal F.C.

With a near equal amount of shots on goal from both teams, it was maintining possession that eventually allowed Arsenal to do in Anderlecht despite their opponent’s more aggressive stance on the pitch.

Galatasaray S.K. 0 – 4 Borussia Dortmund

Borussia made it clear they’d be taking no mess from Galatasaray in this match on Wednesday with a quick two points from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang  in the first 20 minutes of play. The team landed 10 of their 15 shots on frame, continually bullied the UK squad off the ball and swiftly deflected all attempts on goal.

Borussia Dortmund: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 6′, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 18′,  Marco Reus 41′, Adrián Ramos 83′

Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2 – 0  FC Zenit Saint Petersburg

Another game full of cards and plenty of attempts on goal from both sides, Bayer would take the win in the second half. 50% of 12 strikes were on frame for Bayer, dwarfing St Petersburg’s attempts. Wendell would take two yellows while the Russian squad would divvy up 5 among their own.
