International Friendlies Odds and Predictions: France vs Portugal
On Saturday evening France and Portugal will play an international friendly match at the Stade de France.
The teams haven’t played each other since 2006 when France beat Portugal 1 – 0. France also won the previous four matches against Portugal in 2001, 2000, 1997 and 1996.
Most recently, in September, France played Serbia and drew 1 – 1. They also played Spain in September and won 1 – 0. At the World Cup France lost 1 – 0 to Germany but beat Nigeria 2 – 0 and drew 0 – 0 with Ecuador.
Portugal played Albania last month and lost 1 – 0. Earlier this year they beat Ghana 2 -1, drew 2 – 2 with the USA, lost 4 – 0 to Germany and beat the Republic of Ireland 5 – 1.
The Marseille striker Andre-Pierre Gignac has been called up for the match against Portugal after displaying excellent form this season. He has scored eight goals in eight games to help Marseille take the top spot in the French league. He has also greatly improved his fitness under Coach Marcelo Bielsa. Joining him will be Dimitri Payet and Lyon right back Christophe Jallet.
Portugal has switched head coach since failing to impress at the World Cup. However, at present the team is under far greater pressure than France. While France has a secure place in the Euro 2016 finals, Portugal are in the middle of a qualification campaign and so far are not playing particularly well. They suffered a surprise defeat to Albania and are facing a tough match in Denmark.
On the other hand Portugal will benefit from the return of Cristiano Ronaldo who missed the team’s last game due to injury. Ronaldo has had an excellent start to the season at Real Madrid scoring 10 goals in just five league appearances. Portugal winger Ricardo Quaresma will also be joining the team after missing out on the World Cup.
William Hill has France as favourite to win the match with odds of 5/6. The odds on Portugal winning are 7/2 while a draw has been set at 12/5.
