Jonas Gutierrez Leaves Newcastle For Cancer Treatment Ahead of Hull Match
Jonas Gutierrez, the Newcastle midfielder, has revealed that he has testicular cancer and is currently receiving treatment.
Gutierrez has returned to his native Argentina after being diagnosed and has since had his left testicle removed. At present he is undergoing chemotherapy and it is not known when he will be able to return to the football pitch.
Gutierrez became a favourite amongst Newcastle fans after being signed in 2008 but last season he only played two games before being loaned out to Norwich City. Earlier this week he said that despite his obligations to Newcastle he returned home as “What is important is health and I had to start chemotherapy.” He also said that he found the loss of his hair particularly hard to deal with as it has become a characteristic he is defined by.
While Gutierrez undergoes treatment, life is continuing for his team mates as usual back in Newcastle. This weekend they face Hull and have been given odds of 1/1 to win compared to Hull’s 12/5. The following week they play Stoke; most bookies have Stoke as favourite to win with odds of 13/10 compared to Newcastle’s 12/5.
