Nishikori and Cilic Reach US Open Final Following Surprise Wins
Both US Open semi-finals produced shock results with Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer being knocked out. Instead the final will see 14th seed Marin Cilic play Kei Nishikori.
Cilic beat Federer in straight sets 6 – 3, 6 – 4, 6- 4 in just one hour and 45 minutes to reach the final. Federer expressed his frustration at losing but offered warm congratulations to Cilic and has now turned his mind to the Davis Cup semi-final later this week.
Kei Nishikori became the first Japanese player to reach a Grand Slam final by beating Djokovic 6 – 4, 1 – 6, 7 – 6 (7 – 4), 6 – 3. Djokovic, the number 1 seed, was clearly disappointed with the way that he played, but it is likely that he had not fully recovered from his tough quarter-final against Andy Murray.
Both viewed as underdogs, the match is garnering a lot of attention to see who will dominate for the U.S Open Men’s Title.
Nishikori and Cilic have played each other seven times in the past and Nishikori has won all but two of the matches. However, while at most bookies Nishikori is favourite with odds of 4/5, Cilic is not far behind with odds of 1/1.
