The world number one, Serena Williams, has been made the women’s top seed at the US Open as she attempts to win her third consecutive title.

Below Williams is Simona Halep, the French Open runner-up, and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova is third seed.

Williams has won the US Open a total of five times and is now chasing her 18th Grand Slam title. If she manages she will become the third ever player to do so after Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.

In the men’s draw Novak Djokovic has been made top seed ahead of Roger Federer. Britain’s Andy Murray is eighth seed. Murray, who won the US Open in 2012, will be attempting to win his first ATP ranking event since 2013.

In the meantime Britain’s James Ward made it through the first qualifying round beating Aldin Setkic 6 – 2, 6 – 2. However, Daniel Evans, Daniel Smethurst, Daniel Cox and Naomi Broady were all defeated in the first round.
