888poker Drops Suarez Sponsorship
Uruguay’s striker Luis Suarez has lost one of his sponsors after receiving a ban for biting the Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. The online gambling firm 888poker has said it “decided to terminate its relationship” with “immediate effect”.
Suarez was signed by 888poker as a worldwide ambassador just before the World Cup and produced a number of video diaries for the website during the tournament. There may be further trouble for Suarez as it appears that his boot deal with Adidas may also be in jeopardy. Last Thursday the company announced that it is reconsidering its partnership with the player.
Suarez received a four month ban, nine-match international suspension and 100,000 Swiss franc fine after FIFA found him guilty of biting the centre-half Chiellini towards the end of last week’s game which Uruguay won 1-0.
Somewhat surprisingly Chiellini has come out saying that the ban is excessive. On his personal website he wrote that he has “no feelings of joy, revenge or anger against Suarez…my thought is for Luis and his family, because they will face a very difficult period.
While the ban will be appealed, it is likely to take a long time for Suarez to repair his relationships with his sponsors.
