Oliver Kahn, the Bayern Munich legend has claimed that Chelsea’s Champions League win over his former club in 2012 proves that the team effectively ‘bought’ the trophy.

Kahn Claims Chelsea Bought Champions League Win

Oliver Kahn has said that Chelsea effectively bought its Champions League trophy by buying the best players.

Chelsea won the coveted competition after beating Bayern at the Allianz Area 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

However, the former German international goalkeeper Kahn thinks that the result was just a demonstration of how money can dictate who wins the biggest prizes in the sport.

In a recent interview Kahn said, “It is the deciding factor. For promotion to the Bundesliga, you now need a budget of €20 million to €25m. To win the Champions League €300m.”

He went on to say that “Abramovich bought the title but what makes [Chelsea] any different to Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern?”

In 2011 UEFA introduced Financial Fair Play Regulations with the aim of restricting the spending of Europe’s top clubs in order to try and create a fairer playing field. However, many are likely to agree with Kahn’s point of view that the clubs which can afford the best players will keep winning the prizes.
