Serena Williams Dominates at US Open
While the men’s tournament is full of controversy, it seems that Serena Williams is right on track to win the women’s competition in the US Open. Williams is by far the bookies favourite with odds of 4/5, her closest opponent is Victoria Azarenka with odds of 5/2.
In her first round match this week, Williams was so dominant that her opponent needed a hug. Halfway through the second set of the match (which Williams won 6-0, 6-1) her opponent, Francesca Schiavone, walked behind the baseline, found a ball boy and gave him a huge hug.
After the game Schiavone joked, “I don’t need a hug in that moment. I need a game.”
Schiavone is definitely no pushover; she won the 2010 French Open and was the runner up a year later.
She twice reached the quarterfinals at the US Open and has been ranked as high as No. 4.
However, Williams looked almost perfect, she never faced a breakpoint, made only eight unforced errors, hit serves faster than 115mph and took the first 10 games. After the match Williams said that she was “just out there, trying to be focused.”
Williams is hoping to win her fifth US Open title and 17th Grand Slam overall.
