Barcelona to Announce New Coach
Barcelona will be announcing a successor to outgoing coach Tito Vilanova in the coming days and favourites to replace him are Luis Enrique and Gerardo Martino. It was announced last Friday that Vilanova is stepping down with immediate effect to continue his cancer treatment.
The Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has given Enrique odds of 5/4 of getting the job while Martino has odds of 5/2.
Enrique has scored 109 goals in 300 appearances for Barcelona and he coached the club’s B team from 2008 to 2011.
Martino is believed to have the support of Leo Messi and it is thought that Andoni Zubizarreta and Raul Sanllehi will be traveling to Argentina for talks after initial contact was made.
In a recent interview Martino said, “I can identify with Barcelona’s style of football. I’m an admirer of the great work done by Guardiola. This is the style I like the most. Passing is what football is all about.”
Enrique is currently the manager of Celta de Vigo, the club has denied that there has been any interest in Enrique and sources at the club claim that there have been no phone calls from Barcelona.
