2012 – A Sporting Year
It has been an amazing year for sports fans packed with spectacular victories, devastating loses, drama and inspiration.
Basketball fans will always remember LeBron James winning his first NBA title with the Miami Heat in the 2012 NBA Championship.
James put on an amazing show scoring 26 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds to become the first player since Johnson to manage a triple-double twice in a Finals series.
Over the summer swimming and Olympic history was made as Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time.
Phelps won his 19th medal as part of the winning 4×200 men’s relay team and then won a further three by the end of the games. Of his 21 medals an amazing 18 of them are gold.
One of the more negative aspects of the year was the fall of Lance Armstrong. Rather than being seen as one of the most determined athletes of all time, Armstrong will now be remembered as one of the biggest cheats ever.
He was stripped of his 7 Tour de France titles and received a lifetime cycling ban. The US Anti-Doping Agency said he was at the heart “of the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen.”
