Morecambe take on Sheffield Wednesday in FA Cup First Round
Today the final game of the FA Cup first round takes place as Morecambe take on host team Sheffield Wednesday. Morecambe is a young club having only been in the FA for four years, since 2007. On the other hand Sheffield Wednesday, formed in 1867, is one of the oldest league clubs.
However, the match is not as mismatched as it would seem at first glance. Both teams are in League Two and have had similar results over the last few matches. Wednesday is at a disadvantage as their on-loan winger Ben Marshall has been refused permission by Stoke to play in the FA Cup. However, Wolves will allow centre-back Danny Batth to play against Morecambe.
Wednesday are also having problems with their star midfielder Jose Samedo after he limped off during last week’s match against Brentford.
It is worth keeping an eye on Morecambe’s winger Kevin Ellison as he has great experience and has already scored eight goals this season. This is the first time that Morecambe and Sheffield Wednesday have ever met; Morecambe did make it to the third round of the FA Cup as a non-league club in 1962 and then lost to Weymouth. They also made the third round in 2001 and 2003.
