Celebrations in Spanish Bar After €200 Million Christmas Lottery Win
Spain’s Christmas lottery paid out an incredible €200 million in winnings to tickets sold by a bar in a small village in Galicia this week.
El Gordo is the world’s biggest Christmas lottery. However, it has no single jackpot, winnings are distributed among thousands of people in a complicated system. This year the prizes totalled €2.38 billion. Each ticket is given a five-digit number and it is reprinted numerous times in series that cost €200. The tickets are divided into 10 sub-tickets each of which costs €20.
The lottery is a Christmas tradition and people tend to play in groups of family, friends and workmates. 130 series with the winning number were sold in Vilalba, a town of 15,000 people and they will share a prize of €520 million. Of those series, 55 were sold in the San Juan de Alba parish.
