Residents of Spain’s Poorest Region Win El Gordo Jackpot

A portion of the biggest ever lottery jackpot has been won by a group of friends and families in Jaen, a city in southern Spain. Two shares in the winning El Gordo ticket, 62246, went to the towns in one of Spain’s poorest regions.

The largest ever lottery, with total prize money of €2,240 million, was partly won by residents of Jaen in Southern Spain.
There were also winners from Leganes, near Madrid, and Modragan, in the north. Each winner will receive €400,000.
A third of the country took part in the famous El Gordo lottery this week. The lottery had total prizes of €2,240 million and the tickets, like every year, were drawn by students from The College of San Ildefonso.
The ticket 79712 was drawn second and had a prize of €1,250,000 which will be divided between players who had shares in the ticket. It is thought that each shareholder will receive around €125,000.
For the first time in the lottery’s history, any prizes of over €2,500 will be subjected to a 20% government tax. Ticket sales for El Gordo accounted for almost half of all lottery tickets sold in Spain this year.
