Mega Millions Jackpot Surpasses Half a Billion Dollars
A lucky Mega Millions jackpot player could have the best Christmas of their life as there is currently over half a billion dollars up for grabs in tonight’s draw.
A last minute frenzy of ticket buying saw the jackpot grow to $586 million on Monday and lottery officials are saying that they expect another surge in sales before the draw at 11pm ET tonight.Paula Otto, Virginia’s lottery director said, “We’ve never had a jackpot this high the week before Christmas. You like to see winners and you like to see big jackpots. I leave it in the hands of the bouncing balls.”
Up to 70% of the tickets are normally bought the day of the drawing, which means there is a chance the record jackpot of $656 million which was won in March 2012 could be broken. The jackpot is almost certain to overtake the second largest which currently is $590.5 million won in a May 2013 Powerball game.
If no one does win tonight then the jackpot will keep growing until Friday’s draw. However, if there is a winner tonight and they choose to take the lump sum cash option then they will receive an impressive $316 million.
