Geolocation Restrictions Relaxed In New Jersey Boosting Online Gambling
Until now, online gamblers have had no issues gambling on New Jersey state online poker rooms. It seems though that the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) wants players to have more freedom and flexibility when it comes to gambling online. It was recently reported that the DGE is now working on loosening the geolocation restrictions on gambling online in New Jersey. Until now, players living within the state borders are able freely play on the state’s gambling sites.
The company who provides the geolocation services for these New Jersey gambling sites, GeoComply, recently stated that they are able to verify the location of 95% of the players who are in fact located within the state borders.
What this means then, is that 5% of players are located outside of the state and in order to prevent this, DGE and GeoComply created a buffer zone by the border.
Anyone located in this buffer zone is recognized as not being eligible to legally gamble online.
The DGE is now working on reducing this buffer zone thereby increasing the number of players who will be successfully geolocated. To date, gaming revenues have been quite low in New Jersey due to these restrictions, but many casinos see this new move by the DGE as very positive.
Brian Mattingley, the Chief Executive Officer of 888 Holdings PLC, stated that this new flexibility in geolocation should help to increase the accuracy and reliability of pinpointing exactly where a player is located and that it should also increase the number of players in the state.
