Casinos Open in Central Madrid for the First Time in a Century

As soon as the Gran Casino Madrid-Colón opened last month it became an instant hit with crowds flocking to its roulette, blackjack and poker tables. It was the first casino to open in Madrid in almost 100 years and a second casino opened in the center of the city last week. Until 2012 it was illegal to build gambling establishments within a radius of 29km of the center of towns and cities.

Casinos Open in Central Madrid for the First Time in a Century

Thanks to a change in Spanish law casinos are now able to open in the center of towns and cities.

The opening came just after Las Vegas Sands announcing that it is abandoning its plan to build a casino and leisure complex on the outskirts of Madrid after the government refused to meet its demands. When the Casino Gran Madrid opened and the head of the casino Ángel María Escolano launched the first game, the casino had only been given approval to operate a few hours before.

The casino covers over 4,000 square meters over four floors. The main area has a café, slot machines and card tables while the upper floors have a restaurant, a bar and private games rooms.

The new Casino Aranjuez is even bigger with 4,500 square meters across three floors. It has a gambling hall complete with 65 poker machines as well as blackjack and poker tables.
