Governor Cuomo Proposes Las Vegas Style Casinos for Upstate New York
Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed three Las Vegas style casinos in upstate New York as well as two video slot centres in western New York. He has also proposed a moratorium on casinos in New York City.
In the past Cuomo has pushed for a five year moratorium on casinos in NYC, he claims that casino operators will have very little interest in upstate locations if the market in NYC was open. Cuomo also believes that an upstate casino could help attract tourists to NYC.
Cuomo’s proposed bill would mean that Legislature would have to separately approve a casino for NYC as well as turning the slot centre at the Aqueduct racetrack in Queens into a full casino.
When Cuomo announced the bill Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver opposed allowing casinos in Manhattan.
Silver said, “The governor has presented a comprehensive plan, which we will discuss in conference, and I believe we can reach an agreement before the end of session.”
The bill would also have be approved by Senate which has not yet commented on it.
