Casino Denies Dog Access and Apologizes

When going to a casino, one expects to be treated with respect, courtesy, and friendliness. Bringing your business to a casino means bringing money into the establishment, making you the customer, which makes you right – always. So what would you do if what happened to Quintin Teixeira and his girlfriend Lisa Bensch happened to you?

Teixeira and Bensch are a blind couple who have a seeing guide dog. A Sun International Casino, Carnival City Casino, refused to allow the couple’s guide dog inside the casino, saying, ‘No dogs allowed inside.’ This was stated by one of the casino security guards. After later being cleared to enter with their dog, the couple was welcomed into the casino. David Coutts-Trotter, one of the leading executives at Sun International had this to say when he explained why the couple was not let into the casino initially: ‘…after what was clearly a bad communication and misunderstanding of the company’s policy’. The couple has stated that they will once again go to a casino, but they plan to never enter the Carnival City Casino again.

The legal ramifications of this incident should be considered. This couple could have taken the casino to court for damages and financial compensation for discrimination. The outcome, of course, cannot be known, but this was blatant discrimination by the casino. The couple let the situation go by accepting the apology from the casino. But had it been another couple, the incident might have ended up in court.
