Would You Bet 400K GBP that Scotland Rejects independence?
William Hill has confirmed that a middle-aged man placed a bet of 400,000 British pounds ($670,000) in the southern county of Surrey that in the upcoming referendum in September, Scots will reject independence.Various bookmakers in the UK including Graham Sharpe, media project director of William Hill, said that this is the world’s largest political bet ever placed.
William Hill were offering 1/4 odds, which means if the gambler is correct in his prediction of the outcome, he will stand to make himself 100,000 GBP on the bet.
Earlier in the independence campaign, a Scottish man also bet 200,000 Pounds that the vote will be a ‘no’ for independence.
William Hill expects to generate more than one million pounds in bets over the referendum result.
Bookmakers recently shortened the odds on a ‘no’ vote for independence down to 1/5 and the odds on a ‘yes’ vote stand at 10/3.
On September 18th, Scots will vote in a referendum on whether to leave the United Kingdom or not.
According to recent polls, it seems that 40 percent of Scots will vote “no” for independence, 30 percent for “yes” and the remainder is still undecided.
