Playtech Withdraws iPoker Sites from Belgium

Laws in Belgium have led to the online gambling software company Playtech changing its policy regarding iPoker sites available in the country. The company has removed William Hill and Gala Coral from the Belgian market while Ladbrokes has re-launched with a .BE suffix in order to comply with the new laws.

Playtech has made some of its iPoker sites unavailable in Belgium in order to comply with the country’s laws.

Belgium has recently shown that it will pursue operators that don’t fully comply with the law. This led to Playtech’s lawyers examining the laws of various countries and withdrawing from those where it may be risky to operate. Until Playtech applies for a license from the Belgian Gaming Commission its sites will be unavailable for “regulatory reasons beyond our control.”

William Hill posted a message saying, “If not for Playtech’s new regulations, it is likely that players would be able to enjoy the William Hill product online.” However, Playtech responded by saying that it is just complying with the law.

The Belgian Gaming Act requires online gaming operators to partner with a land-based casino in order to receive a license. A blacklist was compiled of sites that do not meet government regulations and the list is continually updated. However, numerous operators have already acquired a license including PokerStars, bwin, Partouche and Unibet.
