Following on from the chip scandal at the Winter Open tournament, the Borgata has introduced new chips for the Spring Open poker tournament.

The chips are more intricate, have more colors and can be authenticated under an ultraviolet light.

The casino’s senior vice-president, Joe Lupo, said, “This was very expensive, but very necessary. In order to have the biggest tournaments in Atlantic City and as the market leader, we need to ensure the integrity of the games.”

The new chips make use of several design and technology elements which are used in the industry. They have been approved by New Jersey’s gambling regulators to be used in tournaments.

As part of the new security measures, casino staff will be carrying out spot checks of chips during the tournament. Lupo said, “We will be checking chips randomly throughout the day using a new process involving the UV lights.”

He said that the spot checks will become “part of the new normal” and added that more there will be more staff and the casino will do more chip counts each day during its tournaments.
