Paddy Power To Stop Advertising Oscar Pistorius Odds
Online gambling operator, Paddy Power, is well-known for pushing the boundaries and their new “It’s Oscar Time Money Back If He Walks” ad campaign which is linked to the murder trial of Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius, has been stopped. Despite the fact that this promotion has been pulled, the bookmaker has confirmed that they will still honor the over 1,000 bets based on the outcome of the Pistorius murder trial.
The British Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ordered the ad to be pulled after receiving over 5,000 complaints. This came after Jean Hatchet, who is a feminist and a survivor of abuse and domestic violence, started on online petition on Change.org demanding that Paddy Power apologize for their ad and donate to an organization for victims of domestic violence. Despite the negative response to the bookmaker’s ad, Paddy Power still got mentioned over 74,000 times online mainly on Twitter.
Oscar Pistorius is currently on trial in South Africa for the premeditated murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steekamp who was a law graduate and a model. It has been reported that the Paralympic sprinter shot Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine’s Day last year after mistaking her for an intruder. Pistorius is also facing two additional charges for firing a weapon in a public area. The sprinter has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
