Poker Pros Head to Johannesburg for WPT Alpha8

The WPT Alpha8 event taking place at Johannesburg’s Emperors Palace next weekend has attracted a number of top poker professionals from around the world including Phil Ivey and Dan Smith.

It is expected that the tournament will pay out over $1 million to the first place along with the prominent WPT title. The Alpha8 is an elite televised tournament which takes place in the world’s most exclusive casinos each year. Last year saw the tournament visit Florida, London and St. Kitts in the Caribbean.

Phil Ivey is known as one of the best players on the circuit with nine WSOP titles and a WPT title to his name. Dan Smith took the poker world by storm in 2005 and has a similarly impressive collection of titles to his name.

The last two Alpha8 events were won by Phillip Grusseum who both times took home over $1 million. He is returning for the event in Johannesburg and will be seeking his third title in a row. Other big names taking part include Jason Mercier, Antonio Esfandiari, Erik Seidel and Jeff Gross.
