The Mathematics of Blackjack and Card Counting
Many people are aware that the most successful gamblers are often good mathematicians. Blackjack in particular has drawn lots of attention due to the mathematical aspects of the game.
By far the most common blackjack strategy is card counting. Card counting was made famous by a number of films, in particular the film “21” which tells the true story of a group of MIT students that become expert card counters before going on to win millions in Las Vegas.
Card counting is basically keeping track of which cards have already been dealt. There are a variety of techniques for keeping track of the cards, but the end result is the same. A successful card counter will have a better idea of what card is likely to be drawn next thanks to basic statistics.
Card counters will often use a famous strategy called the Hi-Lo strategy. Each card in the deck is assigned a value of +1, 0 or -1. Each time a card is dealt players can quickly add up their values and keep track, the higher the number you are left with, the more high cards there are left in the deck. This allows players to make an educated decision on whether to hit or stand.
