Hundreds Gather for Opening of Alabama’s Largest Casino
Last Tuesday hundreds of people got in line for the opening of Alabama’s largest casino. The gambling fans were looking forward to the excitement of the opening and were curious what the new development had to offer. The Poarch Creek Indians who operate the facility say that Wind Creek Wetumpka has 85,000 square feet of casino space with over 2,500 electronic games. There are also five restaurants for patrons to enjoy as well as a 20 storey hotel that will be opened in stages.
The casino cost $246 million to build and is far larger than the tribe’s Wind Creek Atmore which until now contained the state’s largest casino.
The Poarch Creek Tribal Chairman, Buford Rolin, said that the new project will employ around 1,100 people in full and part time jobs.
Cody Williamson, the general manager of Wind Creek Wetumpka, said, “We wanted to make sure when you step in here, you are in a fantasy world. You’re no longer in Wetumpka. You’re in Vegas. You’re in Atlantic City. You are somewhere where you don’t get everyday stuff.”
