Rabbi Forced to Resign After Winning Slots Jackpot
A rabbi has been forced to resign his position at Chicago Sinai after he won a $10,000 jackpot while playing slots at an Indiana casino.
Rabbi Michael Sternfield has been battling his gambling addiction ever since he developed it while working in South Africa.
When he returned to the US he self-excluded himself from the very same casino he ended up winning the royal flush bonus at.
However, after winning it wasn’t long before it was discovered that Rabbi Sternfield not only should not have been at the casino, but had also used a fake ID to enter the premises. Since then he has been charged with trespassing and identity deception.
However, for quite a while Sternfield kept knowledge of the event from his congregation until his photo was spotted on justmugshots.com. After it was discovered the congregation’s leaders insisted that he resigned.
Speaking about his addiction Rabbi Sternfield said, “If I’ve learned anything from these years of struggling, I’ve learned how terribly painful addictions of all kinds are and how incredibly difficult many are to get rid of. This is a chapter of my life that I regret so very deeply and which is painful for those close to me”.
