Is Microsoft Shutting Games for Windows Live Service?

According to a support update from Microsoft, which has since been deleted, Games for Windows Live services will be discontinued on July 1st 2014. The potential closure would have a major impact on at least one Windows PC title, Age of Empires Online, which according to the statement would end its service on the same day.

Is Microsoft Shutting Games for Windows Live Service?

A support update from Microsoft briefly appeared online saying that the Games for Windows Live services will be shut down next year.

The post which Microsoft placed on the Age of Empires Online support page read, “Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although it is available through Steam, Age of Empires Online requires features of the Games for Windows Live service. You can continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100% operational until July 1, 2014 when the server will shut down.”

The post followed a statement last week when Microsoft said it will shut down the Games for Windows Market place on August 22nd.

However, when it posted the marketplace shutdown notice it said that Games for Windows Live would continue to operate.

So far there has been no further comment from Microsoft or games published that release Games for Windows Live titles.
