Dana Castaneda won the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event to become the first woman to win a bracelet this year.

Castaneda came close to skipping the event as she had just finished the Women’s event and there were over 2,000 entrants into the tournament.

After winning she said, “I was just surprised to make it Day 2 and then to Day 3. It’s amazing, I don’t even know how to describe it.”

She went on to describe how happy she was to win an open bracelet and her strategy for surviving the competition, “I just kept setting small goals every day. I just want to make dinner, just make the break and I just kept doing that until I got here.

I got to the final table short stacked and was sure I was going to be the first one out.”

Two weeks ago Castaneda’s grandmother was sick and on her deathbed and told her that she was going to win, “It has been my inspiration through it – I’m going to win because my grandma said I was going to win it.”
