Poker Players Winnings Begin to Rival Sports Stars

While Wimbledon has recently been in the news for increasing the prize money to £1.6 million, this is nothing compared to some of the cash prizes won by the top poker players.

Poker Players Winnings Begin to Rival Sports Stars

The world’s top poker players are beginning to win amounts comparable to the world’s top sports stars

At last year’s WSOP Antonio Esfandiari won an incredibly $18.3 million when the $1 million buy-in event attracted a field of 48 players.

The most recent big money winner was Joseph Cheong who won $1,343,370 at the Manile Millions, back in 2010 Cheong was competing in the WSOP Main Event when he almost won the $8.9 million first-place prize.

However, a bluff went wrong which resulted in him finishing third, but he still took home $4.1 million.

Cheong’s earnings now total $8 million. The same amount that Rafael Nadal had won before his injury took him out of the game for seven months. The tennis star, who is sponsored by PokerStars, recently told the media that poker helped keep him sane during his time off.

Daniel Negreanu has also won impressive amounts, his career earnings are around $17.4 million. Recently Phil Galfond became the third player to take a $10 million profit from online poker tables.
