Bet on the Next Pope
Cardinals have begun the process of selecting a new pope to succeed Benedict XVI and have been locked away in a secret election in the Vatican City.
It is almost certain that one of them will emerge as the new pope and leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics.
Of course the bookmakers haven’t ignored this momentous occasion and there are many betting markets open on who the next pope will be.
The current favourite is Angelo Scola with odds of 37/13. Scola is an Italian Cardinal who was appointed Archbishop of Milan by Pope Benedict XVI in 2011. Trailing Scola is Odilo Pedro Scherer with odds of 24/5.
Scherer is a Brazilian Cardinal and is currently Archbishop of Sao Paulo.
The third favourite, Peter Turkson, with odds of 34/5, is in some ways the most controversial choice. Turkson is a Chanaian cardinal and is currently president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. A recent survey in Africa found that over 80% of Africans believe the continent is ready for an African pope, but only 61% believe the world is ready.
With the voting process potentially taking many days there is still time for those who haven’t to pick a favourite and place their bets.
