Defence Department Couple Win $217 Million Powerball Jackpot
Two very lucky federal employees have won the $217 million Powerball jackpot. The couple, Dave and Nancy Honeywell from Fredericksburg, announced their win in a press conference last Thursday.
Dave Honeywell works as a computer scientist with Defence and Nancy works as a project manager.
David purchased the winning ticket from a Lottery Express machine at Richmond International Airport when he was on the way to Denver for a business trip.
Despite being aware of the massive prize on offer, it still took Dave a couple of days to check his ticket and find out if he held the winning numbers. He told Powerball officials “I thought I was having a heart attack” after finding out he’d won.
When asked what they will be doing with the prize money the couple said that they will be retiring. During the press conference David said, “I told my wife, this is the best Valentine’s Day present you’re going to have.”
They decided to take a one-time cash payment of $136.4 million before taxes.
