Bwin.party to Launch Legal Belgium Operations
A deal between bwin.party and Belcasinos allowing bwin.party to offer online gambling has been approved by the Belgian Gambling Commission.
Belcasinos is a subsidiary of Groupe Partouche, the largest owner of land-based casinos.
There are four land-based casino operators in Belgium which are allowed to apply for a licence to operate online gambling. The new deal will see bwin.party work with Belcasinos to offer sports betting, casino games and poker.
The announcement comes after the outgoing joint CEO of bwin.party, Norbert Teufelberger, was arrested last month and questioned on the company’s online operations in Belgium.
In Belgium only operators that have a licence to run a land-based gambling operation can apply for an online licence.
Prior to the arrest three of the online gaming group’s websites were blacklisted; however, the Belgian Gambling Commission has begun to unblock the sites and agreed to drop all pending legal disputes. In exchange, bwin.party is adapting its systems to comply with the existing licencing regime.
Co-CEOs of bwin.party, Teufelberger and Jim Ryan said that the gropu has “put our difference of opinion” with the authorities “behind us and are now focused on the immediate commercial opportunity.”
