Activision Launches Mobile Social Gaming Platform

Activision Blizzard has announced that it is creating its own mobile social gaming platform, Activate, which will be used by all the publisher’s mobile titles from the beginning of next month.

Activate will be used in two soon-to-be-released iOS versions of Activision Blizzard’s hugely popular Skylanders franchise, Skylanders: Lost Islands and Skylanders: Battlegrounds.

There are also plans to incorporate Activate into previously released games and all future titles.

Activision will now be competing against existing platforms such as Gree, DeNA’s Mobage and Apple’s Game Center.

Furthermore, Avtivision isn’t the only major games publisher to create a mobile social network.

Electronic Arts already runs its Origin platform and has over 9 million registered mobile users. Ubisoft also runs a platform, but at present it is for PC only.

The new Activate platform will allow developers to incorporate friends lists, achievements, leaderboards, invites and cloud storage features into the games. The storage features will mean users can access their saved progress across multiple devices.

The platform will also allow users to login with Facebook accounts, however, users will need to register for an account if they want to use the online modes in Activate-supported games.
