Who Will be the Mercury Music Prize Winner 2012
Speculation is growing over the Mercury Music Prize and The Maccabees, an indie band from Wandsworth, have odds of 12/1 to win it.
The band, whose members met while studying at the Elliott School in Putney, has been nominated for its third album ‘Given to the Wild.’ If they win they shall be the second band from the Elliott School to claim the award, the trio xx won in 2010.
Another possible winner is Jessie Ware for her debut album, Devotion.
The odds at Paddy Power make Jessie (at 8/1) fourth favourite to win.
The album has been described as a fusion of soul and underground dance music. Ware says that she learnt her craft from a community of musicians, DJs and producers in South London.
On the Mercury website is says “The Maccabees highly poetic and emotionally charged Indie has found its sharpest form on third album Given To The Wild” before going to say that “Ware’s Devotion is equally adventurous, opening up a brave new chapter for the UK’s enduring love of sophisticated Soul and underground Dance music.”
Other likely winners are Alt-J for An Awesome Wave (5/6), Richard Hawley for Standing at the Sky’s Edge (6/1) and Play B for Ill Manors (6/1).
