Everyday four million Facebook users are playing SongPop, the fastest growing social game on Facebook.
The game is very simple, you pick category such as “Rock” or “Funk” and then it plays you a clip from the song.
You then need to choose correctly from the list of four titles or artists that it gives you, you play it against a friend and the idea is to pick the correct one before they do.
The combination of the addicting power of music and Facebook has turned this game into a massive success.
The fact that it’s a fast paced game also adds to its appeal. The game moves extremely quickly and keeps bring the user hits of familiarity.
However, despite the popularity of the song, at present it isn’t making any money.
Co-creator of SongPop, Mathieu Nouzareth said that “Costs are very, very high,” Nouzareth says, particularly server costs — “it’s insane how high they are.” But he says the break-even point should be reached within the next few months.
The game makes money from advertising and in-game purchases for access to more songs and genres. Nouzareth wouldn’t comment on total revenues but he did say they get a small amount of money from music sales.
