Facebook hit back at Zynga and other social gaming pessimists claiming that the number of people playing games on the site grew 8 percent in the first 6 months of the year.

Perhaps the social gaming bubble never popped. A Facebook executive was quoted as saying this week that 235 million people played a game on Facebook in the past 30 days, as compared to 205 million a year ago.

Facebook and Zynga are well known “frenemies” – friends who sometimes disagree. It is in Facebook’s interest to show Wall Street that social gaming has a future. With its stock sliding, Zynga seems to prefer blaming a tough environment rather than look in the mirror and accept fault for their less than stellar recent offerings.
