Amazon Enters Social Gaming Market
Amazon has announced the launch of a new gaming studio and Facebook game. Until the announcement Amazon had kept the gaming studio relatively secret, the only clues to its existence being in the job vacancies advertised.
In a blog post they wrote that “Amazon Game Studios is exactly what it sounds like: a new team at Amazon that’s focused on creating innovative, fun and well-crafted games”. They went on to say that the first game “Living Classics” is now live on Facebook.
The game is free to play and isn’t very original, it is a moving object game set against the background of classic children’s books. However, the fact that Amazon is moving into the social gaming market is very interesting.
On their blog Amazon say that they have entered the market because they “know that many Amazon customers enjoy playing games.” They go on to say that they think that Amazon’s unique know-how will enable them to “deliver a great, accessible gaming experience” that customers can enjoy at any time.
However, it is likely that there is more to it. Companies such as Zynga and Rovi are making vast sums of money from social games and it is likely that Amazon wants to do the same. While the game has initially been offered on Facebook it is likely that there will soon be many more Amazon titles in its own app store and available for the Kindle Fire.
Zynga is likely to be unhappy at this news. In recent weeks Zynga have seen their stock value drop by 40% after they announced extremely disappointing second quarter earnings results. Zynga has placed the blame for their poor performance on the new Facebook app centre saying that it favours new games rather than continuing to promote established social gaming titles.
