Sinatra Goes MP3 Las Vegas Style
Looking to spend a few hours listening to Vegas nostalgia? Go no further than the “chairman of the board”, Frank Sinatra! In this article, we review two releases recorded in Las Vegas. The first is the hugely popular Sinatra at the Sands.
Sinatra at the Sands was recorded at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in January and February 1966. Originally released only on vinyl, Sinatra at the Sands features Count Basie and his orchestra and was conducted and arranged by Quincy Jones. This was Sinatra’s first live album and over 40 years later, it is still considered a classic.
It starts off with the soaring Come Fly with Me and moves on with I’ve Got You Under My Skin. Other classic songs include The Shadow of Your Smile and Fly Me to the Moon (remember Astrud Gilberto’s version of both?), Get Me to the Church on Time and ends with the sentimental My Kind of Town.
Another new Sinatra release is Best of Vegas. This mp3-only release from Amazon is a compilation of songs performed in Las Vegas in the 1960’s and 1980’s. The performances include Live at the Sands (November 1961), Live at the Sands (January – February 1966), Caesar’s Palace (March 1982), and the Golden Nugget (April 1987). The songs include classics like Moonlight in Vermont, The Lady is a Tramp, Witchcraft, Pennies From Heaven and of course the Theme From New York, New York.
We love Vegas and Sinatra and these are two excellent choices for an evening of 1960’s Sin City nostalgia. Sinatra’s music has clearly passed the test of time.
