Bookmakers Believe That Brexit Will Never Happen
UK based bookmakers seem fairly certain that Article 50, the two year notice period the UK must give to the EU before leaving, will never be triggered.
At present the odds at Sky Bet on Article 50 happening in 2018 or later or not at all are at 2/1, the shortest odds of all the markets. Government lawyers have already informed the High Court that Article 50 will not be triggered this year and there is also speculation that appeals against a Brexit could go to the UK’s Supreme Court.
The issue of Scotland’s place in the EU is also slowing complicating matters and the civil service’s shortage of trade negotiators isn’t making life any simpler. However, if Article 50 is to be triggered then it seems that January 1 to March 31 2017 is the most likely window as it also has odds of 2/1 and this is followed by April 1 to June 30 2017 with odds of 5/2.
