New South Wales Gamblers Bet $73 Billion on Pokies

Last financial year saw a record $73 billion being bet on pokies in New South Wales, Australia, an increase of more than $4 billion despite government efforts to cut the number of machines available.

The number of gaming machines available in New South Wales pubs and clubs fell by 244 to 93,364 in the same period but this clearly did not affect gamblers’ enthusiasm. In Fairfield gamblers bet £7.6 billion through just 3300 machines in 2014-15, an increase of $639 million.

This same trend could be seen throughout the area with millions of dollars being bet on each machine over the course of the year. The average return to player is 90% which means that players lost more than $7.3 billion last financial year. However, the increase in spending may be due to the popularity of multi-terminal gaming machines which offer games like roulette and blackjack and accept bets of up to $100.
