Australia Faces Widening Horse Race Fixing Scandal
Top Jockeys, professional punters and race industry personalities have all been identified as having a hand in race fixing in this latest scandal surrounding the sport of horse racing in Australia.
Allegations of race fixing and corruption are running rampant in the Australian sport as new claims of top performers and race event notables begin to surface.
Top jockey Danny Nikolic is among those named who allegedly paid kickbacks to a third party in an effort to fix horse racing matches. Several other allegations are being lobbed toward other races in the region.
Another of Australia’s top jockeys stands accused of betting thousands of dollars on a rival during a race in which both competitors were participating.
Leading sports betting authority Betfair has given word that they are currently investigating a serious issue with lay betting, an instance of someone backing a horse to lose, as opposed to win a race. More than two dozen races in question are being investigated as well as another one of Australia’s top jockeys.
”We have been aware of it for some time and we have told the authorities,” report sources from Betfair. ”It is the most serious case we have at the moment.”
As corruption becomes more and more prevalent in the horse racing industry the ability to conduct legalized gambling around the sport becomes less and less supported by government organizations and may eventually eat away at support of fans and casual punters as well.
